The root word zircon comes from the Persian word zargun, meaning “golden,” since its crystals are brownish gold. In its pure state, zirconium is silvery white.

Shine Bright Like a Diamond

Zirconium is famous for its dubious distinction as a convincing “fake diamond.” Cubic zirconium gems sparkle because they display a high refractive index. When light enters zirconium, it is trapped and bounces around inside the gem. When light escapes from the gem, it releases in a range of directions, making the gem sparkle.
